History: Kniphofia 'Flamenco' is a popular cultivar of the Kniphofia genus, also known as Red Hot Poker. Originating from the parent species native to Africa, particularly South Africa, this particular variety is known for its multi-colored spikes of red, orange, and yellow flowers. The Flamenco cultivar is a result of breeding programs designed to enhance the plant's aesthetics, cold hardiness, and adaptability to various soil types. It has won several garden awards and is considered a star performer in perennial gardens, offering multiple seasons of interest. The unique color combination of the Flamenco cultivar adds a tropical flair even in temperate garden settings.

Uses: Kniphofia 'Flamenco' serves predominantly as an ornamental plant and is most commonly seen in perennial borders, mixed beds, and contemporary garden designs. Its vibrant, torch-like flower spikes attract a variety of pollinators, including hummingbirds and butterflies, making it a useful addition to wildlife gardens. The dramatic form and coloration of Flamenco also make it suitable for container gardening when space is limited. The cut flowers have a long vase life and are increasingly used in floral arrangements, adding an exotic touch to bouquets.

Growth Habit & Planting Instructions: Kniphofia 'Flamenco' takes about 24-36 months from germination to reach maturity and start flowering. The plant grows to a height of 24-36 inches and prefers a location in full sun. For optimal growth, the soil should be well-drained and moderately fertile. Sow the seeds indoors in a seed tray filled with quality seed compost, covering them lightly with soil. Maintain a temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C) for best germination results, which should occur within 14-30 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and continue to grow them in a protected environment. When the plants are robust enough to survive outdoors, transplant them to their final location, spacing them 18-24 inches apart. A balanced fertilizer applied in early spring will promote healthy growth and prolific flowering. Mulching around the base of the plant will help conserve soil moisture.
