Capitalizing on this naturally occurring “mistake”, farmers began replanting the new seeds to produce a long grain variety. This variety became known as Carolina Gold Long Grain Rice. \u003cbr\u003e\nWhat started as a local phenomenon became an international sensation earning international awards.  Despite the fanfare, the variety proved increasingly hard for farmers to maintain and was eventually lost around the early 1900's.
