History: Originating from the vast steppes of Mongolia, the Mongolian Giant Sunflower is a marvel of the plant world, known for its awe-inspiring size and vibrant yellow-cream blooms. With its roots in a country characterized by extreme climate fluctuations, this cultivar has been selectively bred to produce enormous, attention-grabbing flowers. Although it was initially grown in Mongolia, this towering sunflower has made its way across the world, captivating gardeners and sunflower enthusiasts alike.

Uses: The Mongolian Giant Sunflower serves multiple purposes. Beyond being a show-stopping ornamental plant, its large seeds are an excellent source of nutrients, suitable for both human and bird consumption. Additionally, the seeds can be pressed to extract sunflower oil. The gigantic flower heads serve as a unique focal point in gardens and can even be cut for oversized bouquets or dried arrangements. Furthermore, their sheer size makes them a natural privacy screen, and their blooms attract a host of pollinators.

Growth Habit and Planting Instructions: Reaching heights of 12 to 14 feet, the Mongolian Giant Sunflower is not your average backyard plant. It requires a spacious area and sturdy support to handle its massive size. Plant the seeds in fertile, well-drained soil, ideally enriched with compost. Sow the seeds about 1 inch deep and space them at least 2 feet apart to allow for expansive growth. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs, generally within 7-14 days. Once established, water deeply but less frequently. Staking may be necessary as the plant grows to ensure it remains upright. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied at the beginning of the growing season will support its vigorous growth. Monitor for pests and diseases, treating as needed. These sunflowers are generally heat and drought tolerant once established but will benefit from extra water in extreme conditions.
