History: Broom corn is a type of sorghum that has been cultivated for thousands of years. It originated in Africa and was eventually brought to the Americas. Initially grown for its utility in making brooms, the multicolored variety has gained significant popularity as an ornamental plant, especially in fall decorations and floral arrangements.

Uses: Multicolored Broom corn is primarily used for its aesthetic appeal in floral and seasonal displays. Its long, colorful seed heads add drama and height to any decoration. While traditional broom corn has been used for making brooms, this ornamental variety is generally not used for this purpose but can still serve as an interesting conversation starter due to its vibrant colors and large size.

Growth Habit and Planting Instructions: This tall annual plant can reach heights of 6-15 feet and produces large, multicolored seed heads that can be up to 36 inches long. For best results, sow seeds in a well-drained soil, 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart, in rows that are 12 to 18 inches apart. Broom corn prefers full sun for most vibrant color development. Regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods. Though broom corn is fairly drought-resistant once established, consistent moisture will ensure better seed head formation. Expect the plant to reach maturity in 90 to 100 days, at which point seed heads can be harvested for decorative purposes.
