When a Seed Lot Needs Recleaning, Drying, or Retesting

    A low result does not always mean the seed lot is beyond recovery. The first responsibility is to identify where the problem occurred: the lot, the representative sample, the test method, the chamber environment, the seedling evaluation, or the records. Corrective action is selected only after the cause is understood.

    Four problem types lead to different actions

    Problem type Typical evidence Corrective action
    Lot condition High moisture, insects, mold, debris, damage, aging, or poor storage. Quarantine, clean, dry, separate, return, reject, or retire; then resample when the lot changes.
    Sample Nonrepresentative draw, mixed lots, insufficient sample, or lost identity. Reestablish lot identity and draw a new representative sample.
    Method Wrong substrate, moisture, temperature, light, pretreatment, or count date. Reset the test using the crop-specific AOSA method.
    Test execution Chamber deviation, contamination, missing replicate, crowding, or incomplete classification. Correct the setup or equipment and repeat the complete test.
    Biology Dormancy, hard seed, weak vigor, disease, or genuine deterioration. Use the applicable germination, tetrazolium, vigor, seed health, or laboratory analysis.

    Recleaning can recover a lot when purity is the problem

    Chaff, broken seed, pod fragments, soil, stones, weed seed, and other crop seed can reduce physical purity and interfere with packing. Recleaning changes the composition of the lot, so a fresh representative sample is drawn afterward. Purity and germination are reevaluated before release.

    Drying and equilibration can protect a sound lot

    Seed that arrives warm or damp can deteriorate rapidly in storage. The lot is segregated, moisture is measured with the crop-appropriate method, and affected containers are handled separately. After controlled drying and equilibration, the seed is resampled. Germination and other analyses are repeated because moisture damage may not be visible from appearance alone.

    Retesting begins with a new test, not a revised opinion

    A retest uses a new representative sample and a complete crop-specific setup. Replicates, substrate, temperature, light, pretreatments, first count, final count, seedling classification, and environmental records are completed again. The new result stands on its own.

    Specialized testing answers questions germination cannot answer alone

    Tetrazolium testing can identify viable tissue in dormant seed. Vigor tests compare performance under stress. Seed health testing investigates selected pathogens. Moisture testing guides storage and conditioning. Grow-outs and trueness-to-variety work evaluate plant identity. Physical purity and noxious weed seed examinations describe what is in the lot.

    Some lots should not be recovered

    Heavy mold, active insect infestation, severe heating, uncertain identity, contamination, or deterioration can make rejection the correct decision. Preventing a compromised lot from entering finished inventory is a successful quality-control outcome.

    The goal is not to make every lot pass. The goal is to make every release decision scientifically defensible.
