A seed test belongs to a seed lot. The lot number, representative sample, test ID, method, dates, analyst record, result, and disposition form one traceable chain. Without that chain, a percentage cannot be confidently applied to inventory, labels, or customer packets.

A lot is a defined quantity with a shared history
A seed lot is not simply every container carrying the same variety name. The containers must share a documented source, harvest or production history, conditioning history, treatment status, and quality profile. Separate supplier lots remain separate unless records and controlled blending establish a new finished lot.
If seed is recleaned, dried, treated, blended, or otherwise changed, the record identifies the action and the inventory affected. A new representative sample is drawn whenever the condition or composition of the lot changes.
The traceability record follows the seed

Test dates matter because seed quality changes
Seed ages during storage. The rate depends on crop kind, initial quality, moisture, temperature, oxygen, packaging, and handling. The test date tells the customer and the quality team when the result was established. Inventory that remains in storage is reevaluated according to its crop, storage history, label requirements, and quality risk.
The newest date is not automatically the strongest result. A strong test requires the correct lot, sample, method, dates, and evaluation.
Traceability continues into finished packets
Finished packets remain connected to the bulk lot used during packing. When a test is updated, a lot is conditioned, or a quality concern is investigated, the record identifies which inventory and packet runs are affected.
This is the practical value of a lot number. It turns seed quality from a general promise into a record that can be followed.
