Seed longevity depends on species, initial quality, moisture, temperature, and storage. Use age as a clue, not a verdict, and run a simple germination test before discarding seed.

    Seed does not expire like milk. It loses vigor gradually, and the rate depends less on the calendar than on moisture, heat, handling, and the biology of the species. Two packets of the same age can behave very differently if one spent a summer in a humid shed.

    The useful decision is not “old or new.” It is whether enough living, vigorous seed remains to justify the space and time of sowing.

    Test before you throw away

    For common seed, a small germination test can save a packet or save a season. For rare seed, use the smallest statistically useful sample and protect the remainder from repeated warming and moisture exposure.

    What seed longevity actually means

    Orthodox garden seeds can be dried and stored, but they do not all age at the same rate. Onion, parsnip, and some herbs are often short-lived; tomato, cucumber, brassica, and many beans can remain viable longer under good conditions.

    Vigor usually declines before every seed is dead. Old seed may germinate slowly and unevenly even when a final count looks acceptable.

    Should I plant extra old seed?

    Do pelleted seeds store as long as raw seed?

    Can I mix leftovers from different years?
