In 2002, original New Mexico 6-4 seed was obtained from the National Seed Storage Laboratory in Fort Collins, Colorado. The New Mexico chile industry and NMSU evaluated 27 breeding lines, selected six for further testing, and chose among them for yield, more uniform heat, fruit quality, easy destemming, and especially traditional flavor.

NMSU released NuMex Heritage 6-4 in 2008. That history makes it a modern, source-documented restoration and improvement of a legacy New Mexican chile, not a vague heritage claim. The cultivar belongs to the New Mexican pod type of Capsicum annuum.
