Lemon yellow, creamy white and soft lime green make a refreshing summer bouquet. This blend combines Canary Bird, Polar Bear and Envy zinnias, with large blooms averaging about 4 in. across and many double flowers. Tall, branching plants bring repeated color to cutting beds and sunny borders. Pick flowers often for the vase, and leave some open blooms for visiting butterflies.
Minimum seeds per packet: 85 seeds.
A fresh blend of lemon, lime and creamy white.
Variety and background
Lemon Meringue is a coordinated zinnia mixture rather than one genetically uniform flower color. The identified NE Seed listing specifies Canary Bird, Envy and Polar Bear, and Applewood’s Dessert Menu Lemon Meringue listing corroborates the blend. These supply lemon-yellow, soft green and creamy-white flowers. The supplier lists plants about 30–40 in. tall, with flowers averaging around 4 in. and many double forms.
Sow and grow
Sow after frost, 1/4 in. deep in warm, drained soil, or start indoors 4-6 weeks early. Keep moist at 70-75 F; allow 4-8 days. Thin to 12-18 in., rows 18-24 in. apart. Water at the base and leave space for airflow.
Season care
Pinch young plants if branching is desired, and use light support where wind or heavy flowers cause lodging. Water the soil rather than the leaves and avoid crowding. Cut flowers regularly and remove faded heads to encourage a continuing display. Leave selected healthy flowers to mature only when saving seed.
Harvest and use
Cut fully opened flowers when stems feel firm, then place in clean water. Remove spent blooms to encourage more. For seed, let healthy heads dry on the plant. Zinnias cross readily; saved seed may change the mixture's colors and proportions.
Saving seed
Let selected healthy flower heads dry and turn brown on the plant. Gather them in dry weather, finish drying under cover, and separate the seed from the flower debris. Zinnias are insect-pollinated and varieties readily cross. Saved seed from this mixture can vary in color, form and proportions; it will not necessarily reproduce the original supplier blend. Store thoroughly dry seed in a labeled container.
Common problems
Powdery mildew, bacterial leaf spots and other foliar diseases are more troublesome in crowded, damp conditions. Give plants airflow, water at soil level and remove badly affected leaves. Young seedlings may suffer from damping-off in saturated media. Inspect for aphids and chewing insects without assuming every damaged leaf needs treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Which colors are included?
Canary Bird supplies yellow, Envy supplies green and Polar Bear supplies white. This is not a yellow-only mix.
How tall does the mix grow?
The supplier lists approximately 30–40 in., depending on conditions.
When should I cut the flowers?
Choose fully opened blooms on firm stems. Place them promptly in clean water and keep cutting for more flowers.
Will saved seed remake the same mix?
Not reliably. Zinnias cross through insects, and color proportions or flower forms can change in the next generation.
